Architecture and people in the Swiss District (Schweizer Viertel), with Dr Hermann Neumerkel

26.04.2012 (19:00)

In the basement of the QF Passage at the Dresden Frauenkirche; 07:00 p.m.

Close to Schweizer Straße, between the central station and Nürnberger Straße, is where the wealthy Swiss district with its numerous villas developed.

This is where in the years 1877 and 1878 Gotthilf Ludwig Möckel built himself a neo-Gothic villa on Leubnitzer Straße 28 that is known today as the Villa Möckel. This is same street where the Villa Haniel (Leubnitzer Straße 7) designed by E. Hanefeldt and built in 1868 and the city villa of the Odol factory owner, Karl August Lingner, Leubnitzer Straße 30, built by M. Gutmann in 1880 and featuring an addition by Wilhelm Kreis are located.

One of the most significant villas of the Swiss district is also the Villa Rübsamen that was built in 1875 and extended in 1880.

The very exclusive Swiss district was also the home of Victor Klemperer between 1928 and 1934 (Hohe Straße 8), as well as being the site of several girls’ boarding schools (for example on Kaitzer Straße 22) as well as of private clinics.

Dr Hermann Neumerkel is a member of the extended board of the historic society Historischer Neumarkt Dresden e. V.
